Hill's Book of Evergreens

Dundee, Illinois: D. Hill Nursery Company, 1936. Hardcover. 9 3/4 by 7 inches; 251 by 180mm. xiv, 304 pages. Hardcover in very good condition. Gilt lettering on spine somewhat faded, and wear to tips of boards and to head and tail of spine. Foxing to endpapers, and some sections of the text have browned pages while others do not, as if two different paper stocks were used. Front hinge a little weak. Bound in green cloth with gold lettering on spine and front board. The book's purpose was to educate the public about the use of conifers and to increase demand for them. Front free endpaper has a previous owner's name and address in pencil, along with "Compliments of the Author" also in pencil, but without a signature. Tipped in on the verso of the half-title page is a twenty-line, typewritten, tree-oriented poem by the author, "Praise to the Pioneers (Written for the Centennial Celebration of Milton [Wisconsin], March 4: 1838-1938)." Tipped in on the rear free endpaper is a short positive review of the book from the publication American Home. Numerous line drawings and color and black-and-white photos. Item #86
