Homer and the Prophets, or, Homer and Now

Chicago: Open Court Publishing Company, 1925. First printing. Hardcover. xiv, 89 pages. Signed by the author, with her handwritten updates. Hardcover, in fine condition, with a good jacket. Bound in green paper-covered boards, in a tan printed jacket. Book has occasional light pencil marks, mostly in the margins, but otherwise is clean and sound. Jacket is split at most of its joints and lacks the lower two-fifths of its spine panel, but no text (other than possibly the publisher's name once on the spine) is affected. Item #858

An examination of Homer's "religious and moral impulse," and of associated aspects of archaeology and classical studies. Hulst, born in Michigan in or around 1865, is remembered these days for her work on goddess mythology, particularly in relation to Perseus's killing of Medusa, and for her contributions to the turn-of-the-century movements for women's rights and other progressive causes. This copy has a 1933 inscription by Hulst to some friends, and on its front endpapers she wrote about 200 words of notes regarding the development of her ideas on Perseus since the book's publication eight years earlier. With the notes and the presence of the jacket, an interesting copy of an uncommon book. Jacket enclosed in a clear, archival-quality, removable protective cover.
