Garrard, a B-24 tail gunner, went missing in action over the Mediterranean Sea when the bomber was shot down in July of 1943. Garrard Hall at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, is named after him. The book was edited by his sisters, and this copy is inscribed by Whittington to two friends, on a blank preliminary page. Illustrated with photographs and reproductions of news articles.
