Letters sent by Edward Parmelee Smith, a minister from Pepperell, Massachusetts, to his daughter Gerty to describe his experiences as a religious worker among Union soldiers in Virginia and Tennessee and in the early postwar period. Smith later became the United States' commissioner of Indian affairs, in 1873, and president of Howard University in 1876. Illustrated with photographs from the period. The editor, minister of the Burton Congregational Church in Burton, Ohio, also contributes a short essay, "A Word to Parents, Teachers, and Other Adult Readers," on ways to discuss the book with young readers.
