Edited by Karpeles, and first published in London in 1968. The songs, "cream of the collection" made by Sharp and Karpeles in the southern Appalachian mountains from 1916 to 1918, include music and lyrics to "ballads and love songs, songs of humor and faith, work songs and lullabies." Includes chord symbols for guitar, banjo or other accompaniment. Also includes, for four of the songs, specimen piano accompaniments written by Benjamin Britten as a guide for pianists.
