Illustrated with black-and-white photographs of fans and lace, accompanied by complementary photographs of other fine arts and nature. Photographs of items from the exhibition have brief descriptive notes. Tipped to the recto of the rear free endpaper is a modern, typed half-sheet labeled "Language of the Fan / Registered in Washington April 1, 1879" listing twenty messages, the first, for example, being "Carrying in right hand front of face" corresponding to "Follow Me."
