John Hay Beith (1876 - 1952) was a schoolmaster, decorated soldier and author. Besides writing light novels and nonfiction, he worked with P. G. Wodehouse on adapting novels for the stage and with film directors including Cecil B. DeMille and Alfred Hitchcock.

Despite Doubleday, Page having published this copy, the jacket's rear panel advertises the author's books published by Houghton Mifflin.
