First published in 1931 in London in The New Sporting Magazine; collected and reissued in 1938 with twelve black-and-white illustrations by "Phiz," and again in 1843 with fifteen color illustrations by Henry Alken. A revised edition in 1869 contained two additional episodes and a memoir from the author. The text of this 1931 edition is, "for the sake of completeness," taken from the 1869 edition, and the plates are reproduced from the 1843 edition "on account of the immense superiority of the original impressions in that edition."
